Ben Nevis Trek in aid of The Resource Charity
It was perhaps a bit presumptuous to expect that someone born and bred in the fens could get to the top of the highest mountain in Great Britain, but we tried. We got approximately half-way before stopping for a rest at a point where the edge of the path dropped straight down about a thousand feet. This was too much for someone who has lived nearly all their life at three feet above sea level. We made the sensible decision to descend. Our guide was very patient and encouraging and by the time we reached the bottom we had revised our personal challenge. As we have practiced on Snowdon and only got to the ridge on the Rhyd Ddu path we now intend to climb Scafell Pike, to the lake. Then we shall have completed the ‘half-way up three peaks challenge’! Think it will catch on?
The Foresters very generously gave us the t-shirt, so we can say ‘been there, done that, got the t-shirt’ and we hope our sponsors will be just as generous. We shall be sending £200 to the National Children’s Home Action for Children and over £350 to the Integrated Resource at King Ecgbert School, Sheffield.
The Foresters give people the opportunity to take action to change their own life, the lives of others and the community. We certainly will not forget the friendship and encouragement we received from the other 29 members, who all completed the challenge and hope others will be encouraged to accept a challenge or follow a dream.
